WEB Influence of surface treatment on interfacial strength and tensile properties of thermoplastic based hybrid laminates

Mechanical properties of hybrid laminates, consisting of alternating layers of aluminum and fibre-reinforced thermoplastics are determined by the materials and their composition as well as the interfacial strength between these layers. In this work, the metal surface treatment and the influence of metal volume faction are studied on hot-pressed hybrid laminates in a 2/1 construction, with aluminum alloy AA6082 and a graded structure of glass- and carbon fibre-reinforced polyamide 6. Different surface treatments, such as mechanical blasting, anodizing, chemical pickling, as well as adhesion promoters were applied on the aluminum alloy and characterized by laser scanning microscopy. After the consolidation the interfacial strength between the aluminum and fibre-reinforced thermoplastic were studied by a double notch shear test. The achieved shear strengths are correlated with the surface parameters and microstructural observations of the interface. The mechanical properties of the hybrid laminate with different treatments and metal volume fractions were investigated by tensile tests.
